Ryan Dress Code Policy

The purpose of Ryan’s Student Dress Code Policy is to clearly define acceptable student attire. The objective of the policy is to promote an atmosphere for academic success while recognizing significant freedom of student choice and expression. It is also to provide guidance to students and parents as to appropriate attire for school and at any school function.

Student clothing:

  • Student clothing cannot depict, imply, advertise, use or advocate: illegal activity, violence, profanity, hate speech, controlled substances or other items that are unsafe or disruptive to the educational process within the classroom.
  • See-through clothing is prohibited. Any article of clothing that fails to conceal undergarments when student is standing or sitting
  • Hats, hoods, and sunglasses may not be worn during the school day. Any headwear worn must have a necessary function (i.e. Spirit Day) and be approved in advance by administration.
  • No pajamas or sleepwear may be worn.

Pants/Leggings: Must be worn at the waist to ensure undergarments are not exposed. Pants with rips (i.e. ripped jeans) can only be worn if the rips are less than finger length in size. Legging must be worn underneath jeans that have rips larger than two inches.

Shorts/Skirts: Short skirts or shorts/biker shorts must be at least as long as a “fist’s length” when arms are hung naturally at your side, not be more than an inch above the knee. Shorts/biker shorts cannot be form fitting.

Tops: Tops should cover torso and all undergarments.

Footwear: Shoes must be worn at all times and should be safe for the school environment (bedroom shoes/slippers, flip-flops/sliders shall not be worn, except for school activities approved by the principal). Footwear must have a back covering or strap (i.e. sneakers, Crocs, etc.). Shoes should be rubber soled and not have any attachments such as wheels or anything else that can cause a hazard in the hallways.

Ryan’s dress code has been approved by NYCDOE Title IX. Thus, the administration reserves the right to determine what constitutes appropriate dress. Students who do not adhere to these guidelines will not be allowed to attend class. Parents will be called if appropriate clothing is not available or the student refuses dress-code appropriate clothing
